A pallet of handsets or a trailer of pharmaceuticals disappears and the invoice for the goods is the number everybody quotes. It is rarely the number that hurts. The traditional controls are not stupid. They are simply built for opportunistic theft, and the theft that takes a high-value trailer is not opportunistic. A numbered seal is a detection device with a single reading, taken at the destination, by whoever happens to be standing there. A load that cannot be opened away from an authorised location, on a vehicle whose deviation raises an alert within minutes, is a harder target than the one parked next to it — and organised theft is a business that picks the easier target. What no software does is stop a determined crew with an angle grinder and twenty minutes. The honest claim is deterrence, faster detection and an evidence trail. It is a fair objection and it deserves a straight answer. The controls here are aimed mostly at the cases where the driver is not the risk: a stranger presenting as a collection, a subcontractor's vehicle you have never met, an agency booking on a Friday night.
