On paper the fleet is fully tracked
Every vehicle has a device against its name in the spreadsheet, and that spreadsheet is what gets shown when someone asks about coverage. Then somebody sorts the live view by last contact and the picture changes. A block of units has not reported in weeks. One has a suspended SIM. Two are on vehicles that were sold in the spring and are still generating a monthly line on the data bill.
The failures are rarely dramatic. A fuse gets pulled during a workshop visit and never goes back. A harness chafes through behind a dash panel. A fuel sensor drifts out of calibration and keeps producing readings that look entirely plausible and are gently wrong. A lock's battery fades over a season. None of these announce themselves, and a device that reports nothing looks a lot like a vehicle with nothing to report.
Underneath it is an ownership gap. The installer moved on after commissioning. Operations assume the devices work because the map is populated. IT does not consider a fuel sensor to be IT. So the estate ages without anyone holding a list of what is fitted where, which firmware it runs, when it was last calibrated, or whether it is still attached to a vehicle you own.
Run the estate like a register, not a map

There are things this deliberately does not attempt. It will not fix a cut harness or a pulled fuse from a dashboard; it will tell you which vehicle to send someone to, and that is the honest boundary of remote management. Over-the-air updates depend on what the manufacturer supports, and where a model does not support them the platform tracks the version rather than pretending it can change it. Calibration still needs a person and a known quantity of fuel. The value here is that nothing sits broken for a month before anyone notices.

Step 1: Take stock of what is fitted
Devices are enrolled against vehicles with serial, model, firmware and SIM. The first pass usually finds units nobody knew about and vehicles nobody had covered.
Step 2: Set the expectations
Each device type gets a reporting cadence, a health threshold and a calibration interval. That is the standard everything is measured against from then on.
Step 3: Watch for divergence
Silence, flat readings, falling batteries and SIM limits open tasks routed to whoever handles that depot's hardware, with the vehicle and location attached.
Step 4: Maintain the estate
Firmware goes out in cohorts, calibrations are scheduled before they lapse, and every swap updates the register so it stays true rather than aspirational.
Step 5: Retire cleanly
Disposal releases the device: recovered and refitted, or retired with its SIM cancelled. The register and the data bill end the month agreeing with each other.

Fleets running only trackers are usually well served by device health. Once a vehicle carries four devices from three vendors, the register becomes the thing that stops the estate drifting.
Usually, and to varying depths. Where a manufacturer exposes an API or a standard protocol, third-party units can be enrolled with their health, firmware version and reporting cadence tracked the same as anything else. Remote actions such as over-the-air updates depend entirely on what that manufacturer permits, and for some models the answer is that you can see the version but not change it. We would rather tell you which of your models fall in that category during evaluation than after.
Three patterns matter. Silence is the obvious one: no contact past the expected reporting interval. Implausibility is subtler and more dangerous — a sensor reporting a value that never changes is worse than one reporting nothing, because it looks like data. The third is trajectory: a battery declining across weeks, or a SIM approaching its ceiling mid-month. All three open a task, because the ones that get missed are rarely the loud ones.
Technically yes, and we would advise against it. Rollouts go out by cohort: a pilot group of a few units, a watch period, then progressive widening. Firmware failure on one device is a service call. Firmware failure across four hundred devices simultaneously is a fleet with no telematics and no fast way back. The cohort model costs a few days and removes the scenario where a single bad build takes the whole estate offline.
Disposal triggers a decommission step rather than being left to whoever remembers. The device is either recovered for refitting or retired, its SIM is cancelled, and KO Fleetz updates the register so the unit is no longer counted as covering anything. This is dull, and it is where a lot of quiet cost hides: units still billing data on vehicles that left months ago, and coverage numbers that count devices which are now somebody else's property.
No. It removes the need to go looking blindly. The platform tells you which vehicle has a problem and what the symptom is, which turns an estate-wide check into a targeted visit. But a chafed harness, a pulled fuse, a lock with a damaged shackle or a sensor that needs recalibrating all still need somebody with hands on the vehicle.
