The check call costs at both ends and answers nothing

Count the calls a dispatcher makes in a shift purely to establish position, multiply by the minutes each takes including the ones that go unanswered and get retried, and you have a full role's worth of time spent acquiring a fact KO Fleetz already holds from a device on the vehicle. The driver's end costs more than the dispatcher's. The answer is not even good. 'About twenty minutes' is a sincere estimate from someone who has said 'about twenty minutes' for the last hour, who cannot see what the traffic ahead is doing, and who is being asked to do arithmetic at seventy kilometres an hour. A location you had to ask for is already out of date

Everything about phone-based visibility is a snapshot. A driver's messaged pin is true for the second it was dropped and decays from there, and it exists only because somebody thought to ask. Departure times get written on a sheet at the start of the day and never revisited. The result is a dispatch office that knows precisely where every vehicle was at some point this morning and has no idea where any of them is now.

This gets worse exactly when it matters. On a normal day the assumptions hold well enough that nobody notices. On the day a motorway closes, three drivers are simultaneously re-routing, two customers are ringing, and the dispatcher is trying to rebuild a picture of the whole fleet by making calls one at a time to people who are currently very busy. No, and nobody's is. A tracker samples position and transmits it on an interval, so what you see is the most recent sample rather than a continuous feed. Moving vehicles typically report every several seconds, parked ones far less often to save data and battery, and important events push immediately instead of waiting for the next scheduled report. Add a second or two of network transit. The practical consequence is that a pin on a motorway sits behind the vehicle by roughly one interval's worth of road, which is why the age of the fix is shown rather than hidden.

The live map goes stale and says so, which is the important part. GPS itself still works, because the satellites do not care about your mobile network, so the device keeps logging positions to its own memory. When coverage returns KO Fleetz uploads the backlog and the breadcrumb trail fills in behind the vehicle. You end up with complete history and a gap in live visibility. Any vendor claiming live tracking through a signal blackspot is describing something the physics does not allow.

Open road with a clear sky is good to a few metres, well beyond what dispatch needs. It degrades in the places you would expect: dense city centres where tall buildings bounce the signal, underground car parks and tunnels where there is nothing to receive, and multi-storey structures. In those environments the pin can wander by a street or drop entirely. Worth knowing before you draw a small geofence around a loading bay in a city and then wonder why arrivals fire erratically.

Those are features; this is the operating problem they serve. Geofencing answers whether a vehicle entered a defined place. Trip replay answers what happened on a journey that has finished. This solution is about the live decision: who is nearest, will this vehicle make its window, what do I tell the customer who is on the phone now. All three run off the same position stream, which is why they belong in one platform, but they answer questions at three different points in time.

Physically, usually yes, particularly with an OBD-port device designed to be removable. What they cannot do is unplug it quietly. When a unit stops reporting, KO Fleetz raises a health alert with the time and last known position attached, and a vehicle that repeatedly goes dark during the same part of the same shift is a pattern rather than a coincidence. Hardwired installations with a concealed run are considerably harder to interfere with. Nothing is tamper-proof, but you should know within minutes rather than at month end.

By itself, no. It tells you a vehicle is going to be late; it does not make it early. Visibility only converts into performance if somebody acts on what it shows, which means re-sequencing a drop, warning a customer before they notice, or re-planning the route while there is still time to matter. The tracking is the input to that work, not a substitute for it. If on-time performance is the actual goal rather than visibility, improve on-time delivery is the solution written around it, and reduce detention time deals with the waiting that causes most of the damage.
