The customer wants an ETA. Nobody can give one.
The call lands at eleven. A consignee wants to know when the truck arrives, and the only way to find out is to ring the driver, who is driving and therefore does not answer. He calls back forty minutes later and says he is close. Close could mean twenty minutes or two hours. The consignee has phoned twice more by then.
So dispatch assembles an answer out of guesswork: departure time, a rough sense of the route, a mental allowance for traffic. The guess is wrong in a predictable direction, which is optimistic. Commitments get made on top of it, and when they do not hold, the fleet wears it.
The worse version is the vehicle nobody has heard from since the morning. Not late exactly, not missing, simply unaccounted for. Nothing distinguishes a truck queuing at a weighbridge from one broken down on a hard shoulder from one parked outside the driver's house.
Answer it without phoning anyone
Each tracker reports position, speed, heading and ignition on a fixed cadence, typically every few seconds while the vehicle moves and less often while it sits, which preserves both data allowance and device battery. KO Fleetz renders those reports on one map that dispatch keeps open beside the phone.
What matters is that the map is current rather than a snapshot, and that it admits when it is not. Every vehicle carries the age of its last fix. A pin that has not updated in eleven minutes says so, instead of sitting there looking authoritative. Clicking any vehicle gives position, state and timestamp together.
It will not tell you why, and it does not pretend to. A truck stationary for half an hour at a customer site is either unloading or waiting, and no live map can separate those two. Step 1: Install the tracker and confirm first fix
Wired to permanent power and ignition, then verified end to end: it acquires satellites, reports in, and shows a plausible position before the vehicle leaves.
Step 2: Choose the reporting cadence
Frequency trades freshness against data cost. Trunking rarely needs the interval urban multi-drop does, so cadence is set per vehicle profile.
Step 3: Put the map where the decisions happen
Dispatch gets the live view on a screen they already look at, filtered to the vehicles they actually control. A map nobody has open answers no questions.
Step 4: Escalate the exceptions
Overdue reports, unexpected stops and vehicles far from their planned position raise themselves. Watching a map all day is not a job anybody does well.

Frequently asked questions
There is always a lag, and anyone claiming otherwise is selling something. A fix has to be acquired, transmitted over a cellular network and processed before it reaches your screen. In good coverage with a short reporting interval, that is usually a few seconds. In poor coverage it can be minutes. This is exactly why KO Fleetz stamps every pin with its fix age rather than presenting all positions as equally current.
The tracker keeps acquiring GPS positions, because satellites are unaffected by cellular coverage. It stores those fixes in onboard memory and uploads the backlog when it reconnects. The live map goes stale during the gap and says so through the fix age, then fills in the missing track once the buffer arrives. Nothing is lost, but the route only becomes visible afterwards.
For position tracking, no. A hardwired tracker reports independently of the driver, which is the point. A driver app becomes relevant for the things a device cannot know by itself, such as proof of delivery, trip status or expense capture. Those are separate modules. The tracking itself does not depend on anybody remembering to press start.
Not here, deliberately. The live map is built for the present and stays uncluttered because of that. Three tools because they are three genuinely different questions.
Under open sky, a modern GNSS receiver typically resolves to within a handful of metres, which is enough to tell you which yard a vehicle is in but not always which bay. Accuracy degrades in urban canyons, under dense canopy and inside covered terminals, where signals reflect off structures. Expect metres, not centimetres, and treat a position pinned inside a building with appropriate suspicion.
A pulled device stops reporting, and that silence is treated as an event rather than as nothing happening. The platform knows which vehicles are expected to report and flags the ones that stop. Many trackers also carry an internal backup battery that keeps reporting briefly after main power is cut, which turns a disconnection into a timestamped alert at a known location.
