Ask which truck can take the consignment and the booking clerk will look at a list of registrations and know the answer. That knowledge is real and it is unrecorded. It lives with the person who has seen these trucks loaded a thousand times, and it walks out of the building at six o'clock. The new clerk on the evening shift has the same list and none of the knowledge.

So the fleet develops habits. A 40-foot goes out with a booking a 20-foot could have carried, because the 40-foot was the one somebody was sure about. No. There is no three-dimensional stowage planner, no pallet arrangement and no axle weight distribution model. It holds the rated capacity and the load type against the vehicle and puts them in front of the person making the booking. How the goods are actually arranged inside a 40-foot, and where the weight sits over the axles, remains the judgement of people who can see the consignment. Software that pretended otherwise would be a liability.

Whichever way your business sells it. Load Type and vehicle type are master data, so a fleet quoting in tonnes and a fleet quoting in 20-foot and 40-foot equivalents both configure what they use. Container work tends to be sized by type; bulk work tends to be weighed. A fleet doing both keeps both. Forcing everything into one unit would only produce a figure the booking clerk mentally converts back every time.
