The formula
- Utilisation pillar = Fleet utilisation, clamped to 0–100
- Availability pillar = Vehicle availability, clamped to 0–100
- Fuel discipline pillar = 100 − (Fuel burn above target × 4), clamped to 0–100
- Idling pillar = 100 − (Idling share × 2.5), clamped to 0–100
- Maintenance planning pillar = Planned share of maintenance, clamped to 0–100
- Loaded running pillar = 100 − (Empty running × 2), clamped to 0–100
- Weighted total = (Utilisation × 20) + (Availability × 15) + (Fuel discipline × 20) + (Idling × 15) + (Maintenance planning × 15) + (Loaded running × 15)

Assumptions and limits
- The weights are our editorial judgement, not a standard. Fuel and utilisation carry twenty points each because they move the most money in most fleets. If that is wrong for yours, the score is wrong for yours.
- The multipliers that turn a penalty into a score — four for fuel variance, two and a half for idling, two for empty running — are scoring choices with no research behind them. They exist to make the pillars land on a comparable scale, nothing more.
- A composite score cannot be benchmarked against another fleet, because no other fleet computed it the same way. It is only meaningful measured against your own previous score with the same inputs.
- Six pillars is not everything. Safety, driver retention, compliance and customer service are absent, and a fleet can score well here while failing at all four.
- Garbage in, confident number out. The score looks authoritative regardless of whether your idling figure came from telematics or from a guess in a meeting.
- Nothing is capped for gaming. Report zero empty running and zero fuel variance and the tool will congratulate you.
Why a composite score at all
Fleet metrics tend to be owned by different people who never disagree with each other, because they never meet. The workshop owns availability. The fuel figure sits with finance. Empty running belongs to planning, if it belongs to anyone.
Each of them can be doing well while the fleet does badly. The workshop hits availability by keeping spares off the road for parts. Planning hits its service level by running half-empty. Nobody lied. The fleet still loses money.
A weighted score forces the trade-off into one room. Its value is not the number. Its value is that improving one pillar at another's expense stops looking like a win.
Read the pillars, not the headline
A score of seventy-one tells you almost nothing on its own. The same seventy-one can come from a fleet that is mediocre at everything, or from one that is excellent at five things and catastrophic at the sixth.
Those are opposite situations. The first needs a slow grind across the board. The second needs one problem fixed, and probably fixed this month.
So the pillar rows matter more than the headline. Sort them, find the lowest, and start there. The 'points on the table' figure exists to make that gap concrete rather than abstract.
Scoring the same way twice
The trap with any scoring model is redefining the inputs between runs. Someone changes what counts as idling, the score jumps eight points, and a quarter of work gets credited to a definition change.
Write down what each field meant when you first ran it. Which vehicles were in scope, which were excluded, where the idling number came from, what your fuel target was. Keep that note with the score.
Then run it quarterly with the same definitions. The trend is the deliverable. A single score is a screenshot of a fleet that has already moved on.
Frequently asked questions
No, and this tool will not pretend otherwise. The score is composed of pillars we chose, with weights we chose, on a scale we invented. Any fleet quoting a benchmark for it would be quoting our arithmetic back at us. It is a self-comparison instrument. That is a limitation and we would rather state it than dress it up.
Because in most operations they compete for the same attention and move similar amounts of money. Fuel is the largest controllable running cost and utilisation determines how thinly the fixed costs spread. If your fuel bill is small because your vehicles barely move, the weighting flatters you, and you should reweight it.
Zero, which gives that pillar full marks. Service fleets, plant, refuse and utility vehicles do not run empty in any meaningful sense. Be aware that fifteen per cent of your score then comes free, so your total is not comparable with a haulage fleet's total. This is a reason to compare only against yourself.
Yes. Cut spare capacity and utilisation climbs. Defer scheduled work and the planned-maintenance share can rise for a while because there is less of it. Push drivers harder and idling drops. The score has no idea about service levels, safety or asset condition, so treat a sudden jump as a question rather than a result.
